Practical 3: Electrolyis (Topic 4)

  • Equipment: 0.5 mol/dm3 solution, beaker, lid with holes, electrodes, 4V power supply, crocodile clips
  • Add copper chloride solution to beaker
  • Add a lid with holes to put the carbon electrodes through
  • Attach crocodile leads to the electrode and connect to a low voltage power supply (4V)
  • Use forceps to hold blue litmus paper by the positive electrode (it bleaches)
  • Leave for a few minutes then turn power supply off
  • Observe negative electrode
  • Safety: wear goggles, open windows (chlorine gas)
