Practical 3: Electrolyis (Topic 4)
- Equipment: 0.5 mol/dm3 solution, beaker, lid with holes, electrodes, 4V power supply, crocodile clips
- Add copper chloride solution to beaker
- Add a lid with holes to put the carbon electrodes through
- Attach crocodile leads to the electrode and connect to a low voltage power supply (4V)
- Use forceps to hold blue litmus paper by the positive electrode (it bleaches)
- Leave for a few minutes then turn power supply off
- Observe negative electrode
- Safety: wear goggles, open windows (chlorine gas)
